Flock and Fiber Report

Oregon FLock and Fiber Festival 2011Well, it's been a solid six weeks since the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival, and I haven't filed a report.

This is mainly because it ended up being kind of a disappointing day for me: I had intended to go with several friends, but instead, I spent Saturday morning at the vet with Morgan the cat, who had a UTI and needed some antibiotics.

You Are The Chosen One — Now On Display

You may remember that earlier this summer I participated in, and posted about, a group knitting project conceived by local artist Seann McKeel.

The "You Are The Chosen One" project has been completed, and will be on display in downtown Portland (on Couch St, between 6th and Broadway), through the month of September.

Better Than Yarn Bombing

Out at Staccato Gelato yesterday with DH — yum! — we came across this call for knitters to support a public art project:

Some info from the project's website:

You Are The Chosen One is a community knit mural composed of 100– 12 inch x 12 inch squares and 8 border pieces. When completed the squares will be sewn into a billboard that reads "You Are The Chosen One" and will be displayed downtown Portland on NW Couch in the fall of 2011.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
1.  Click a section upon the mural grid at this website to reserve a space.
2.  Your name will be added to the contributor list and your email will privately be sent to me, Seann McKeel, and I will only email you with announcements about the project.
3.  Knit and send your 12 inch x 12 inch square
4.  Send your story to be posted on the website (anonymous okay) answering why you are the chosen one.  What were you chosen to do in your life?

DEADLINE:  July 1, 2011

Flock and Fiber is Just Around the Corner!

My very favorite fiber festival of the year is almost here!

Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival, or OFFF, is always held during the 4th full weekend of September at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby, Oregon. This year, the dates are September 25th & 26th (with classes also held on Friday the 24th).

Girliest. Yarn. Ever.

And it's MINE!  Yay!

plum crazy girly yarn

plum crazy girly yarn closeupThis yarn comes from "Plum Crazy Ranch", and I bought it within 30 minutes of arriving at OFFF on Saturday morning.  The creator said she'd had it hanging up for a year and a half — which at first I thought meant, no one had bought it for a year and a half, which I could not believe — and then she continued, "but I decided I could finally part with it."

Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival!

Once again, it’s that time of year — my #1 favorite fiber event, the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival, is this upcoming weekend!

Why is it my favorite?  Probably because it was the first one I ever went to, when we moved here from Texas.  You have to understand that handknitting was not nearly as popular a decade ago as it is today — and certainly not in Texas, it wasn’t.  When I entered the Canby fairgrounds and saw what looked like the WHOLE WORLD of yarn and knitting and books and fleece and animals and classes and and and…!!

It’s Hard Being A Celebrity

A couple of weeks ago, I insisted on performed my annual act of knitting "celebrity":  being a judge for the Knitting Bee's "Naked Bears" clothing competition.  Hey, not only do I get my 15 minutes of fame — I also get to have some fun hanging out with knitters and a couple of free glasses of wine, as well as chocolate truffles.  What could be easier?

Nothing to Say?

Ya know, it’s hard to blog when the things you are doing are (a) things that you can’t write about or (b) boring.

In the second category lately are many administrative things, like setting up fall class schedules and working on websites.  The good news is, the Polar Bear Patterns site is coming along nicely — well, at least it’s functional.  There are still a few things to work out — mainly I’ve been having issues figuring out just how to glom everything I do into one place.  It’s harder than it sounds:  patterns, classes, general knitting, etc.  At least, it’s harder for me than it sounds like it ought to be.  I’ve been doing everything myself up to now, but I’m thinking I may soon need some professional help.  (And I’ll need someone to work on my websites too — ba-dum bump!)

UFOlympics: the eighth and ninth events

Yes, you may well have been questioning why there is a total of 12 UFO's on my UFOlympic "decathlon" list.  (Actually, there are 13, because I had to add one UFO #0 that I forgot about when making the original list.)  But it's a good thing.

UFOlympics! the seventh event

Hey, are you getting as sick of the UFOlympics as I am?

It was fun to begin with — it was great to get a couple of projects out of the way and all that — but I’m getting a definite feeling of stuck-in-a-rut now.  Maybe this is why the real Olympics only last a couple of weeks, instead of seven… ya think?

UFOlympics! the fifth and sixth events

Well, it's nearly halfway through the timeframe I set for my personal UFOlympics.  (In fact, it's only about 40% of the way through, if you don't count that "vacation" time I spent with strep.)

UFOlympics! the fourth event

OK, so I know I said I wasn't going to work on the UFOs during my "vacation".

Well, that was before I got strep throat on the very first day of my "vacation".  I mean, it's not like I had this penciled in on my calendar:

UFOlympics! the third event

Wow, this UFOlympics thing is getting to be quite an eye-opener for me.

For one thing, I have started to realize just how little time I devote to knitting in the course of a standard week.  I mean to the actual act of pulling one loop of yarn through another.  Sure, I spend plenty of time writing about knitting, and teaching others about knitting, and working on my someday-I’ll-have-a-new-cool-website-about-knitting — but as for ACTUAL KNITTING, it seems to be an endangered species at my house.

UFOlympics! the Decathlon

Well:  I’ve been seriously winnowing out the UFO pile in preparation for the Games of Summer.  I’ve had to revise my rule a bit, and I think I’ve got a goal now.

UFOlympics! the Summer Games

OK, I got game.  (Whatever that means.)

I also still got plenty of UFO’s.

So, here goes:  I’m officially entering the 2008 Summer UFOlympic Games.

Welllll, kind of officially.  There’s some wiggle room there, I think.

On Saturday, DH and I went downtown to play a little bit in the nice-ish weather.

His idea of fun was to pick up some tickets for the upcoming Joe Jackson show, have lunch someplace new, and take some photos of the downtown bridges.

Sock What?

Both my sister and a college friend recently sent me copies of this Wall Street Journal article about knitting.

More specifically, it’s about "Sock Wars", where the idea is that everyone playing the game is an "assassin" and has an assigned  "target".  You are supposed to "assassinate" that person by knitting them a pair of socks, and then you send them to your target before your assassin sends a pair of finished socks to you.

Madr-uh-oh!-na

Well, this sucks.

I was all set to go to the [Madrona Fiber Arts->http://www.madronafiberarts.com/] festival for the first time.

It’s pricey, but after several of my friends/students went last year and took a “Tailored Knitting” class with [Jean Wong->http://www.knittingwithjean.com], they all said, “You need to take this class!”  Lots of math, lots of persnickety finishing and fitting.  Beautifully fitting garments.  Sounds right up my alley.
