Wrap Cardigan, Part 4 - in which we fix some things

Warning!  Parts of this post are verrrrrry graphic and may be disturbing!
Where we left off:  I had knitted the back to the underarms, the fronts to the underarms, joined ‘em up, and worked my way down to the waistline.  And I was rejoicing over the fit of the armholes.
OK, now for the bad news:  I failed [...]

Sasquatch Report

Hey, we’re back from our trip to Sasquatch over the Memorial Day Weekend.  And it was interesting.
Sasquatch is a big 3-day music festival held annually in an outdoor amphitheater in the Columbia River Gorge.  DH has gone a couple of times in recent years, but I have not.
I knew it would be crowded, and the weather would [...]

Roomier Short Row Heels

OK, even I can admit that this short row heel obsession thing may be getting a bit out of hand.
But there’s another little gem of genius here worth sharing, in my efforts to eliminate the inelegant flap-and-gusset-style heel from the face of the earth.
I’ve seen where some people, especially men, prefer the fit of an F’n’G heel, because [...]

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

There are two knitting questions that I get asked on a regular basis which I will not answer.  Just don’t even try.
Not that I don’t know the answer, or I don’t have an opinion.  It’s just that I have found that giving an answer usually leads me into more trouble.
Question #1:

What should I knit?

I used to actually [...]

FYI: No Friday Group this week

Due to the holiday weekend, the Friday morning Group Class will not be held on 5/23.
Hope everyone has big plans to get lots of knitting done!  I’ll have some car time to kill, so I hope to put in some serious knitting hours.
We’ll resume Friday class on 5/30.

Happy Knitting!

Wrap Cardigan, Part 3 - let’s get this party started

Well, an update on the stupid wrap cardigan is loooong overdue.
Last post, it was late at night and I had just used the wrong size needles to restart the upper back.  Remember?  I sure do.
I had re-swatched on a size 4 needle to try to get a bit firmer fabric, because after steaming, the size-6-needle-fabric relaxed and [...]

Why Do We Purl?

Every so often, as I’m teaching a new knitter, the question comes up:

What is the point of purling?  Why don’t we just ‘knit’ all the time?

This is actually a really, really good question, if you think about it for a minute.  Why DO we bother with purling?
After all, a ’stitch’ is just a loop pulled [...]

Karla’s Gift

Earlier this year, one of my very good students & friends moved far, far away.  Very sad.  She is living somewhere warm & sunny now, so I’m not even sure what she’s going to knit from now on.
One of the things I like best about this friend — I’ll call her "Karla" –

(hi Karla!  I warned [...]

The Double-Stitch Short Row Heel - a.k.a the “yo-yo”

So a few weeks ago, I wrote about sock heels.  How I don’t really like flap-and-gusset style heels, and how the EZ afterthought heel usually seems too small for me, and how I’d been checking out all kinds of short row heels, in my search for the Best Short Row Heel of All Time.
I did knit [...]

Twisted 3-st Cables, the Japanese Way

So, flipping through a Japanese knitting book of pattern stitches one day, I came across a twisted rib and cable pattern that I thought would make a VERY handsome sock for DH…which it did.
If you’ve never seen a Japanese knitting book, let me tell you – very sensible system they have, those Japanese.  Everything is graphical.  [...]

Kenkyo Socks

OK, once again my lack of recent blogging is due to me having to work on other stuff.  (Lately I’ve really been forced to admit there are only so many hours in a given day, or week.  And some of them are required for sleeping, or else I get even more really cranky.)  But big [...]
